5 Ways Hunting and Ammo Support Conservation and the Public

Ask any hunter if he or she believes the hunting industry contributes greatly to the economy of their state and chances are good you’d get an affirmative answer.

But do you know just how important hunting and ammo sales are to state wildlife agencies? That’s just the tip of the iceberg, too, because agencies — and the public — benefit from them as well as from anglers, target shooters, boaters and others.

Check out this info from the National Shooting Sports Foundation and very cool graphic that explains how important hunting is to the economy.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced April 28 the distribution of $1.1 billion dollars to state game and fish agencies—money that was generated by hunters, target shooters, anglers and boaters through excise taxes on purchases of firearms, ammunition, archery and fishing equipment, electric boat motors and taxes on the purchase of motorboat fuel.

Recently, NSSF developed this infographic to illustrate how those funds collected by manufacturers of firearms and ammunition are directed to conserve wildlife and habitat, as well as to support hunter education and the development of public shooting ranges.

The USFWS’s Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration program has provided more than $15 billion for conservation and outdoor recreation opportunities— money that benefits all Americans, not just hunters, target shooters and anglers.

This method of conservation funding, begun in America in 1937, has been adopted by many countries around the world. It’s a system that all sportsmen and women participate in and can be proud of.
