Back in the olden days when hunters talked on telephones with dials and used their eyes and binoculars to scout or hunt, my father taught me some great lessons about deer.
Don’t look for an entire deer, he said. Look for the glint of sunlight off an antler. Look for an ear flicker or tail wiggle. Vegetation grows vertically, so look for the horizontal outline of a deer’s back, something a bit different in the overall picture.
And he always had a binocular with him in the truck and when we went into the woods. I can’t remember the brand of my first binocular. But the body was metal, the glass wasn’t great and the old leather strap was cracked. Yet, they were glorious tools when I wanted to look into the woods and fields to try to spy a deer.
One day, I finally did! I saw a group of does toodling across a cutover. Everything my father had taught me became more clear that day and those lessons still resonate. I have multiple binoculars and, unless I have a fit of stupid, don’t go deer hunting without them.
You shouldn’t, either. With the 2015 ATA Show going on in Indianapolis, check out the info below about the new Vanguard Endeavor ED II binocular being introduced this year:
