CWD Outbreak or Lone Deer Infected?

Illinois officials are working to determine if a deer found in DuPage County infected with chronic wasting disease is an isolated case or whether others have the disease.

A deer with CWD was detected in the herd of the Mallard Lake Forest Preserve, according to The Beacon News.

“There is no threat to the public’s health or safety,” Forest Preserve District ecologist Brian Kraskiewicz told the newspaper. “However, we’ll be working with the IDNR to test additional deer to determine if this was an anomaly or if there is an issue among the herd.”

The county’s Forest Preserve District and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources are doing more tests on other deer. This is the first case detected in DuPage County.
