Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the Pennsylvania man who died this week after falling from his tree stand.
This tragedy should reinforce the following steps every deer hunter should make before hunting and while hunting:
1. Always leave a map of where you will be hunting, including the precise location of your tree stand.
3. Always where your full body harness at all times.
4. Allways where a Life Line while climbing to and from your tree stand.
From Pittsburgh’s Action 4 News:
“LESSON FOR HUNTERS EVERYWHERE. PITTSBURGH’S ACTION NEWS 4 IS IN NEW TOWNSHIP TO EXPLAIN. Reporter: POLICE CALL IT A HUNTING ACCIDENT, THAT THE VICTIM WAS FOUND BY HIS NEIGHBOR AT THE BASE OF THE A TREE STAND, AND EXPERIENCED HUNTER, WHO LAST SPOKE WITH HIS WIFE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. HE WAS AN AVID HUNTER, ALWAYS KNEW HE WOULD BE IN THE WOODS THIS TIME OF THE YEAR. Reporter: WHEN THE 53 -YEAR-OLD FAILED TO RETURN HOME LAST NIGHT, HIS FAMILY GREW CONCERNED, AND THAT’S WHEN POLICE SAY HIS DAUGHTER ASKED THE NEIGHBOR FOR HELP SINCE THEY HUNTED TOGETHER. AND THE NEIGHBORS SAID, WELL, WAIT UNTIL 9:00. HE MIGHT HAVE GOTTEN A DEER, AND THAT WAY GIVES TIME TO GET IT HOME AND HE’LL BE HOME. 9:00, WHEN HE’S NOT HOME, THEY WENT BACK OVER. Reporter: THE NEIGHBOR FOUND HIM A QUARTER MILE IN HIS WOODED AREA, NOT FAR FROM HIS HOME. THE RESCUE CREWED SEARCHED THE WOODS USING ATVs IN THE DARK AND COLD UNTIL THEY FOUND THE BODY. HE FELL 50 FEET TO THE GROUND, BUT UNCLEAR JUST NOW IF IT WAS AS HE WAS CLIMBING UP THE TREE OR COMING DOWN. THE DETECTIVES FOUND THE SAFETY HARNESS IN THE POCKET. SOMETIMES THOSE, A LOT OF TIMES, THEY USE THEM WHILE IN THE TREE STAND TO KEEP THEM FROM FALLING OUT OF THE STAND. Reporter: THE BEST THING HUNTERS CAN DO IS LET SOMEONE KNOW WHEN AND WHERE THEY ARE GOING HUNTING.”
