Illegally Killed Deer Nets Man Misdemeanors, No Jail Time

An Indiana man faced three years in prison on a felony firearms charge but pleaded guilty to three misdemeanors for illegally killing a whitetail deer in October.

Donald Ward, 47, of Brownsburg, Ind., received 178 days probation and 80 hours of community service as part of his plea agreement. A jail term of 178 days was suspended in exchange for his plea. He originally faced a felony weapons charge but that was dropped.

Ward illegally used a prohibited firearm outside of hunting season to kill a giant whitetail buck nicknamed “Nightmare” by locals. The .270 rifle was not permitted during the season that was open Oct. 2, when officials say he killed the deer about 5 a.m. from a road.

Ward lost his hunting and fishing privileges for a year, paid a $500 fine and also forfeited his rifle.
