Searching for Aliens and Deer Huntin’

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is taking applications for a deer hunt at the National Green Bank Telescope.

deer huntingThe Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, or GBT, is the world’s premiere single-dish radio telescope. Its enormous 100-meter diameter collecting area, its unblocked aperture, and its excellent surface accuracy provide unprecedented sensitivity. Facilities of the Green Bank Observatory are also used for other scientific research, for many programs in education and public outreach, and for training students and teachers.

The special resident-only, controlled hunt is scheduled for Oct. 19 and 20 at the site in Green Bank. Submitting an application enters a hunter in a drawing for a maximum of two days on the site. Applications must be received on or before Aug. 3.

The maximum bag limit during the hunt is one antlerless deer per day. But an on-site lottery will be held each day of the hunt that will allow five hunters to hunt a deer of either sex.

Participating hunters must have a West Virginia hunting license or be exempt from having to purchase a license.
