Getting a degree in wildlife management and conservation-related fields isn’t new, and now another university is stepping up to the plate with scholarships for those interested in the outdoors.

The University of Montevallo is located about an hour south of Birmingham in central Alabama. It’s widely known for its strong liberal arts curriculum and now its president, Dr. John Stewart, is offering more to its students. He’s established the President’s Outdoor Scholarship, which will cover some of the cost of tuition.

“We live in an area of the country where hunting and fishing is part of the ethos, and part of our culture,” Dr. Stewart told Yellowhammer in a telephone interview. “I personally grew up doing a lot of hunting and fishing, with a great deal of respect for outdoor resources. We saw this as a way to serve so many students in our area who come to college and study, but also would like to remain plugged into their passions outside the classroom.”

Scholarship money will come from the University of Montevallo Foundation. Students will need to demonstrate outdoors accomplishments and have a personal commitment to conservation. Stewart also is creating a broad environmental conservation studies program that covers topics from wildlife and habitat conservation to preparing from the field to the table.

“There is such an appreciation for the environment at [Montevallo] already, and given that so many of our students come from within 100 miles, it just seems like a natural marriage to us,” Stewart said. “It’s created a lot of buzz and a lot of excitement about giving students the opportunity to retain that love and passion for the outdoors for all four years of their college experience.”
