UPDATE: Hunter’s Record Book Buck Was Illegal, Now Faces Additional Charges

An Indiana man has admitted to illegally killing a 16-point whitetail buck that could meet criteria for Boone and Crockett record standards.

Indiana Department of Natural Resources officials said Austin M. Spain, 22, of Lynn, Ind., admitted to killing the buck after already killing one earlier in the Indiana season. Hunters in Indiana are allowed to kill just one buck per season.

The Indianapolis Star reported that Spain shot the buck the weekend of Nov. 17-18, but already had killed a buck. Indiana DNR officials said during its investigation that Spain admitted illegally killing the deer after initially saying it had been killed in Michigan. State officials did not say what prompted the investigation.

The deer reportedly would score above or near 180 on the Boone and Crockett scoring system. To make the B&C record book, a buck killed with a firearm must score at least 180 points.

According to the DNR, the 21-year old is looking at charges of the illegal taking and possession of deer, a class C misdemeanor, and illegal tagging, also a class C misdemeanor.

UPDATE 08/12/13 — County prosecutors filed two more misdemeanor counts against Spain following information from a confidential source. They have accused him of killing two more deer, illegally, last November.

A bench trial slated for early July was put off until Aug. 30 at the request of Spain’s attorney. Wildlife officials say Spain used a former girlfriend to illegally check in the deer he allegedly killed in November.

  1. That was dumb! He should have known too much talk about a deer like that. Why would he even be hunting if he was tagged out. What a waste of a nice buck.
