Uncle Ted, Meet Eddie Van Halen

If you listened to Wednesday’s inaugural Deer Talk Now show featuring special guest Ted Nugent, you might have heard one of the questions tossed at him was related to his music career.

Van Halen's 1978 self-titled debut blew away the rock music world with a new sound and intensity.

Way back in the dark ages of the late 1970s, back when disco – horrors! – was thankfully losing its nightmarish popularity, Nugent was touring the country a little ol’ band named Van Halen.

Legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen wasn’t quite legendary yet, as the band’s  self-titled and ultimately famous debut album hit the shelves in 1978. But his reputation was growing and the band was turning heads. The first time Nugent listened up close, he was blown away.

“I was not only able to share hunting camps with greatest hunters in the world, but I’ve been surrounded by the greatest musicians in the world,” Nugent said. “Van Halen are incredible virtuosos … when they came on the scene I was really exhilarated because they put their heart and soul into it.”

(Listen at the 27:40 mark of Deer Talk Now for Nugent’s quotes on Van Halen.)

Here’s Eddie Van Halen’s take on that first meeting.
