Could you wait more than five years to take a shot at a whitetail deer, knowing it had grown from a healthy 2-year old into a true trophy?
Veteran hunter and writer Don Higgins did just that, tracking a buck on his Illinois farm for more than five years. It took patience and stealth, but the reward of watching it and learning its habits during that time was his payoff. The 12-pointer scored 176.
Higgins will be this Wednesday’s special guest on Deer Talk Now, joining hosts Dan Schmidt and Brad Rucks of Deer & Deer Hunting on the live, 1-hour live webcast that airs at 12 p.m. Central from Deer & Deer Hunting headquarters. Mathews, Carbon Express and ICOtec present deer Talk Now.
Your questions for Higgins are critical to Wednesday’s show, so send them in on the “Deer Talk Now” webpage now. For nearly two decades Higgins has authored numerous articles focusing on hunting monster whitetail bucks that have appeared in all of the major whitetail hunting publications. In 2006 he wrote his first book, Hunting Trophy Whitetails in the Real World, which sold out in less than a year. Higgins just recently released his second book, Real World Whitetail Icons … In Their Own Words.
Additionally, Higgins runs a whitetail and habitat consulting service that has taken him to numerous states. He has worked with many hunters and landowners to advise them on projects and help complete the recommended habitat improvements. Higgins and his wife, Robin, also work as a private contractor planting trees and creating wildlife habitat on government and private projects. Higgins’s books, photos and more information can be found here on his site.
