Sweet Escape

They say “home is where the heart is.” I certainly cannot disagree, especially when talking about one’s deer hunting “home.”

My hunter’s heart will always call home a little cabin in Wisconsin’s northwoods. My mom and dad bought the one-room cabin in 1970 as a place where they could escape with their seven kids for memorable summer vacations. And escape we did … for the better part of the next 30 years.

Dad turned the cabin into a mansion in our eyes, complete with indoor plumbing and a Franklin woodstove. It took a few years, but we eventually adopted the place as our deer hunting headquarters. It was warm, comfortable and an overall great place to reconvene after the day’s hunt. When we weren’t rattling the rafters with laughter and exagerrated hunting stories, we’d be cooking venison chili or planning for the next day’s adventures.

Although our Coffee Lake Hunting Club no longer hunts from that cabin, my goal is to someday resurrect it in the same fashion: from a quaint, yet comfortable cabin somewhere in the Big Woods.

Have similar dreams? You needn’t wait, because as a loyal D&DH reader, you can win a full-log cedar cabin  by merely entering the F+W Publications/Ward Cedar Log Homes Great Log Cabin Giveaway.
