Filming a Hunt Is the Hardest Hunt of All

Lights! Camera! Action! And presto! We have instant hunting television at its finest!

Cue the broadside Booner, wait for that perfect sunray light, get that handsome bowhunter stud all groomed and coifed, then get those multiple camera angles just perfect for the perfect shot and ultimate Cecil B. DeMille hunting television production masterpiece!

Not so fast Farnsworth! Quite frankly, nothing could be further from the truth. Filming hunts makes for the most difficult and frustrating hunting of all, believe you me.

In our gungho dedication to promote and celebrate this ultimate hands-on conservation hunting, fishing and trapping lifestyle to the masses, my dazzling wife, Queen of the Forest Shemane and I set forth on our Spirit of the Wild TV challenge and adventure way back in 1989 when the show first appeared on Public Television across America.

That this raw, unapologetic, blood and guts, tooth, fang and claw, down to earth, no BS, real hunting documentary honesty in all its political correctness crushing splendor actually ratings records and set pledge income records in all 26 states on which it aired on this mostly liberal network says volumes about the commonsense connection hunting has with American families.

I wasn’t surprised at all.

Recently for the first time in more than 27 years, I went bowhunting for deer without my SpiritWild VidCamDude at my side, and it actually felt kind of weird. And wouldn’t you know it, for the 1st time in many months I finally had a buck I’ve been after all season make his arrival and give it to me for a good half an hour.

Oh the torture! I just couldn’t bring myself to kill this great buck without it being on film for the TV show.

Now who’s weird!

Hunting has always been a supreme challenge for me, and bowhunting beyond description in the difficulty department. But adding the increased challenge of filming the hunt is borderline insanity at its most daring.

Even with experienced master hunters that know all about stealth, patience and timing doing the filming, the doubling of the human presence more than doubles the disadvantage of getting a shot at game.

That means that wind, light, shadows, scent, camouflage, timing and movement are all more important than ever.

But as you can see on all those various hunting TV shows, with ultra-attention to every exacting detail, it can be done, and done rather well apparently.

If you are looking to discover the ultimate challenge in the deerwoods and aren’t afraid of tortuous trial and error, go ahead and gather all the necessary gear to film your own hunts or convince a buddy to film for you.

You will discover a whole new and very expansive higher level of predator awareness that in the long run will make you a better hunter overall. Plus the footage you will have of all those things that bring us so much joy and gratification in the great outdoors can then be shared with family and friends who will surely get a major kick out of it.

Hunting is hard. Bowhunting is very hard. And filming a hunt is the hardest hunt of all. Go for it!
