The Season: Deer Mount Stirs Excitement

Vatoville Outdoors
Deer & Deer Hunting Editor Dan Schmidt shot this 11-pointer in South Texas in 2011.

Two days until bow season starts here in Wisconsin. I’m absolutely coming out of my skin. Can’t really sleep at night; can’t concentrate at work … especially when work is writing, talking and thinking about deer and deer hunting!

Spent my lunch hour driving to Mike Laskowski’s Spring Creek Taxidermy shop in Amherst, Wis., to pick up the awesome 11-point that I shot down in Texas last December. Holy mackerel, that deer got bigger since the last time I saw him.

I was blessed to have taken this buck during a gun hunt at Vatoville Outdoors (Steve and Michelle Anderson; 325-450-0287), a free-range ranch near Sonora. It is utterly amazing how deer can grow this big in that environment, but they do. Texas has been under a severe drought for more than two years. Amazingly, these deer survive and flourish. Of course, it takes a little help from land managers to do so. Supplemental feeding and manmade water tanks provide the needed energy.

The excitement of that hunt and other great memories are fueling me this preseason. But it will be the mere chance to sit in a tree and watch the sunrise and set that I will soak up like a sponge. Going to savor every moment.

Are you ready for this year’s hunt? Don’t forget to gear up for the season with awesome deals from our Deer Shop.
