Shockey’s Favorite Big Buck Tactic: Still Hunting

Jim Shockey

Tom Miranda of the Whitetail SLAM has authored a new book, The Rut Hunters. This Tom Miranda blog features excerpts from that book.

If you take a look at the Whitetail SLAM map you’ll see that the Dakota Region extends extremely far north into the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Each fall optimistic
hunters cross the border into the land of hockey and strong beer for the chance to tag out on the
biggest-bodied whitetails you’re going to find anywhere.

Overall hunting uber-stud Jim Shockey has more experience hunting Canada than most, and he is particularly fond of an old-school method of taking whitetails in his home province of Saskatchewan.

“In my home area you need to be flexible. You never know whether it’s going to involve rattling,
baiting, or even spot-and-stalk in certain situations. All of them can work, but my personal favorite
involves still-hunting.

“There is nothing I love more than finding a track of a big, mature buck in fresh, powdery snow. It’s
not good if the snow is crusted because you’ll never catch up to him, but if there is half-of-a-foot of
fresh powder it’s perfect. I like to find a track in the morning and set out after him.

“What I love about it is that they literally can’t get away if you’re willing to keep following them. Usually, I’ll follow a buck until I feel I’m getting close and then I’ll slow down to the point where I only take a step every minute or so. While I’m in this zone I also grunt, rattle and rake the brush to see if he’ll show himself.

“It’s one of the most exciting ways to hunt, and there’s nothing better than knowing when you start on a track in the morning that you’ll most likely run into that buck at some point throughout the day.”
