In this episode of Grow ’em Big, Steve Bartylla explains how a chainsaw can be a deer manager’s best friend when planning improvements to habitat. Learn the do’s and don’ts about hinge-cutting trees, and discover how man-made bedding areas can hold deer on a property all year long.
Hinge cutting involves cutting through a tree to get it to fall, but not cutting all the way so it maintains a connection to the root system. This will allow the tree to continue living and also, most likely, put out shoots around the trunk base that will provide even more screening cover and new forage.
Hinge cutting can be done on small and large trees. As Bartylla explains, safety should be the first and foremost thing in your mind. We’re talking about deer and deer hunting, so be careful.
One of the great things about hinge cutting is the versatility. You can create screening cover, travel routes to help get deer moving in a specific direction, or bedding cover for young deer.

The Firminator The Firminator is by far the most versatile piece of equipment in the industry. The operator can choose from a wide range of angle and pitch adjustments to perform many different functions. If a site is to be planted for the first time and is heavy with debris, the disk angles can be set aggressively along with a heavy forward tilt of the entire unit for deeper disk penetration. If a minimal till operation is desired, then the angles and pitch can be adjusted to just slightly cut through top litter without disturbing the soil excessively. A common question we get is do I need to disk the soil with other equipment first before using The Firminator? The answer is NO! The Firminator will do all the necessary work of planting a food plot from start to finish. www.thefirminator.com
