We Tip Our Hats to Boone and Crockett

“It takes less time to do things right than to explain why you did it wrong.”

— Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

by Daniel E. Schmidt

No truer words have ever been spoken. In the wake of tonight’s landmark news that will most likely forever change the annals of deer hunting history, the Boone and Crockett Club is on the verge of making a right out of a series of serious wrongs.

They say it takes a big man to admit when he’s wrong but an even bigger man to do something about it. Well, in this case, it took a bunch of real men to admit that instant replay was needed in the case of the Johnny King Buck. The club’s decision to assemble the forthcoming panel-scoring session is not only the right call, it’s the only call B&C could make to put this saga to rest.

Everyone who loves big deer and deer hunting should stand, remove their camouflage caps and give a hearty salute to the men who made this happen. Here’s to you, Eldon “Buck Buckner, Jack Reneau, every one of the 32 members of the B&C records committee and, ultimately, the B&C board of directors.

This thing has been six years in the making. In less than three weeks, the “feature film” will be over, and we will know — once and for all — if the largest typical-antlered whitetail that God ever created will finally get the credit that so many believe it’s due.

Stay tuned. Few stories have endings like what’s potentially brewing here.

Way to go, Boone and Crockett.

  1. Your caption writers need to do a better job. Try biggest “typical” deer ever killed, because it certainly will not be the biggest deer ever killed. Your other recent article shows King holding the unmounted rack and pumping his fist with a caption saying he is celebrating learning the buck was getting scored. Did he buy the antlers back from Jay Fish and then unmount them, or is it possibly a reproduction rack? Otherwise I am guessing it is not a recent picture as the caption implies.
