In this video, Joe Shead discusses the shed hunting techniques he uses to continue to grow his renowned whitetail antler collection.
“Shed hunting” is defined as seeking the antlers whitetail bucks dispose of during the post-rut winter months. As with regular season hunting, large antlers are valued over smaller antlers. However, because a complete set is rare, many shed hunters prize matching antlers over all else.
As shed hunting continues to grow in popularity, some hunters have trained dogs to find sheds. The practice is not regulated the same way as hunting with a weapon, yet many game agencies do have guidelines about harvesting material from wild animals.
