Any rut action yet

Postby Stickman » Fri Nov 26, 2010 10:18 pm

Have seen young bucks scent checking does in the heart of Dixie in the past two weeks but no mature bucks yet.
If you can find it you can kill it.

No concrete evidence of any rut activity here yet.  We took a nice 9 pt 11/26 he came to the field to feed and was not interested in the does.  On 11/28 my 12 yr old had a 120 class (according to his account) 8 pt come to a field with 2 does.  He was not tending or chasing, but was simply with them.  He got buck fever and missed the shot at 130 yds.  It was his first encounter with a big buck like that while hunting in a blind by himself!  Typically starts happening around here 12/22-23 through Jan 15 or so.

A friend of mine killed a 160 class 9 point in Pickins County last week, 20 does in the field and he came running into the field scent checking. I guess he was looking for love in all the wrong places.

That is a good sign.
Still nothing here in Lee county yet.  Seeing does and bucks but not together.  Still not seeing any increase in scrapes etc.  My 8yr old and I went out yesterday in the 30 mph wind and had a small 6pt come to the field at 4:30pm.  He left and returned an hour later with 2 does.  He was not checking them or chasing so I'm stil not sure what stage they are in around here!

As of 1-9-2011, I have found where the first mature bucks are chasing does and scrapes are popping up everywhere. A good sign now I will get my game on.

Fresh scrapes just started popping up here (being Colbert County) around 01/07.  Seen 2 scrapes that were bigger than the seat of a large recliner.  Tried to a take a shot at a large 3x3, only because he is the biggest 3x3 I've ever seen, but I had the worse luck ever.  I pulled the trigger on him and my firing pin hit the round but the round went nowhere!  3x3 heard the clap of my pin hitting the round and got the heck out of dodge.  I was using those Winchester PowerMax .270 rounds and nothing happened.  pinhole in case but head still intact.  First time that's ever happened to me.  Switched back to Federals.  Anyway, back to the original question...scrapes, rubs and our does are traveling together.

Last weekend (Jan. 8) we didn't see any signs of the rut in Conecuh county, didn't see a single deer, fresh scrape, or rub. I've been hearing rumblings though that it is picking up this week on other forums and we'll be back up there tomorrow afternoon thru Monday to see for ourselves. Good luck everyone, bring home a big one!

I watched young bucks cruising and chasing does all day Sat. the 15th. I killed a 160# 8 point in the late afternoon, his neck was swollen and he stunk as bad as anything.
Stump sittin since 1981
