What's your favorite deer caliber?

Postby buckfarmdude » Mon Jun 01, 2009 1:18 pm

I like to hear from you hunters on what your favorite caliber is for deer hunting and why. Also feel free to include what type of ammo you prefer, the type of land that you hunt, etc.
Thanks!

180 gr., 30.06!

I cannot use this in Iowa (shotgun only) but when I am hunting Northern Missouri farm country I really enjoy the accuracy and knock down power. I understand that there are flatter shooting calibers, but I limit myself to 150 yards or less. To be honest, all my rifle kills have been well inside of 100 yards.

30-06......180 gr.
Could be an echo....from above....but its the same rifle I've been hunting for moose, bear and deer.
It has never let me down.

I can be just as accurate with my rifle then any other. My longest shot was approx. 175.
All other animal shot was within 80 yards. Its short, 18.5 inch barrel, easy to carry....

I guess same reason as JPH

One more time, 30-06 180 gr. pointed soft point core-locked bullets by Remington. Extremely deadly on whitetails!

Federal Fusion 165 gr. 30.06. Most of my shots also come within 100 yards, and the deer usually go right down.

30-06 150 gr.  All the deer I have shot with it have gone down right away.  Love the knock down power and the recoil isn't bad on it either.

I also use a 30-06 150 grain. I have only shot one deer with this gun so far, but it did a great job. I used to shoot a 243 with 100 grain bullets and that just didnt do the trick. I lost the biggest buck of my life because of that.

Odd one out I guess --- I like a 308 loaded up with Winchester 150 grain ballistic silver tips. After that a Remington 7 mag with the same load.  I hunt in the deep south and most of my stand shots are way under 200yds and in recent years I try to keep them under 100 just because its funner for me & requires more skill to get closer to the game.
It matters not the weapon nor its caliber, rather the caliber of the one who wields it.

I personally have always hunted with a .243 100gr for the past nine years with great success. Remington Model Seven. I have killed several deer with it, and several other members of my family have killed multiple deer with it. We've dropped a few of them in an apple orchard at 170+ yds. We've never lost one due to "undergunning".
I just bought myself a new rifle. Remington 700 .308 SPS. I wanted the .308 for a little more downrange punch. I'd like to think it's also a better "brush gun". I live and hunt in Maine, so we've got everything from fields to real thick woods. I liked the versatility of the caliber.
