Well, the "save the meat" came from what I understand to be the reason why the 150 was introduced when the .270 was young. Hunters felt the high speed 130 did more damage than the slower rounds (30/30 and such) that they were used to. That is where the 150 came from. I'm not old enough to have been there first hand :) but this is what I have read to be the case. Note sure if it still holds true, assuming it ever was.

I did some checking on the balistics charts for 150s and 130 from Remington and Federal. I didn't look at all of them. But for the most part the 130 had more energy at all distances. Federal has a 150 BTSP starts out with less energy but passes the 130 around 200 yards. Neither ever has an advantage of much more that 60 ft-lbs. It looks like the 140s might have a bit more energy but not really until you get out past 200 ro 300 yards.

But I think what might give the 150 an advantage is that if both bullets lose the same percentage of mass the 150 has more than the 130. If you're going to handload then you can probably squeeze some more velocity our of the 150 and get some extra energy if you thing it is needed.

Just saw that Winchester has a 150 load that they are pushing to a velocity near that of the 130. They have a 'choose your ammo' utlity on their website and if you choose Elk with a .270 this is what they give you.

This is the one that Winchest 150 recommends when you tell them you want to use the .270 on Elk. The also recommend the load with the 130.

40+ bucks for 20 rounds. Ouch. But I guess compared to the cost of an Elk hunt that is nothing.
