H&R 500 S&W Handi Rifle

I purchased a H&R 500 S&W Handi Rifle for deer hunting. I'm having trouble getting the scope vertical adjustment to dial down to zero. I have used the shortest scope mounts possible and still stay clear- above the hammer. With the scope dialed down as low as possible, it is still a little high at 50 yards. At $3.00 a shot I need to bore site and have good adjustment prior to shotting alot.

Has anyone had this problem with these rifles?
What type of scope are you using on this rifle?
What is the height of your scope rings?

You could shim the rear scope ring or the base at the rear screw. Other than that, you will have to look at the specs of your scope for range of elevation and windage adjustment and then look for other scopes with more range than what you currently have.

How are you bore sighting it?

First I used a laser bore sight to dial the scope in as close as possible. Then I did a sight visual with the gun in a secure vice. I then shot it several times to make sure that what I was seeing was correct.

I have never had to shim a scope in the scope rings. What type of material would you recommend to use for a shim?

Don't shim the scope, shim the scope base.

How much is a little high at 100? 4", 6"? You may want it a little high at 100 yards as that round will drop like a rock beyond that. What most people don't realize is a little high at 100 makes for much much less drop at say 300. For example a .30-06 sighting in at 100 yards is dropping over a foot at 300 yards. Sighted in at 300 yards however it's only 4" high at 100 yards.

So even at 6" high your probably still hitting low at 200 yards with that rifle, but it's still packing enough lead to be very lethal at that range.

could be a bad scope seen 2 different bushnells have a simular problem 1 was elevation 1 was windage. crosshairs were improperly centered at time of assemley. try another scope if possible.
