First rifle?

Postby hunts2long » Tue Oct 13, 2009 10:18 am

Wondering what everyone had for their first deer rifle and if they are still hunting with it....mine is a Remington Model 740 Woodsmaster .308 that I got new in 1959...($149.95). Have spent 20 to 30 days a year with it, except for 4 years while in the Navy...Dad used then...Good Luck this year and be Safe....hunts2long

My first rifle was a model 94 winchester .30-30. I sold it, and upgraded to a Remington 700 BDL/DM IN .30-06
I sold that when I won a Browning BAR .30-06 in a raffle!
Been hunting with the BAR ever since.

My first deer rifle was a Remington 742 in 30-06.  My hunting buddy sold it to me in 1984, and he died of cancer in 1992.  I hunted with the rifle until 2004. On the last day of season, a freak wind blew the rifle off the rack and it crashed to the concrete floor of the porch at camp.  The gunsmith wouldn't work on it, so I have retired it.

Remington Model 700 ADL Synthetic in .243 Win.; sold it to buy a Model 7 Stainless/Synthetic in .308 Win.; sold it to buy a Synthetic Model 700 Mountain Rifle in 7mm-08 Rem.; sold it to buy a Ruger Model 77 MkII in .30-06 Springfield.

I've had the Ruger now for four years. It has taken my largest deer to date, a nine pointer in 2006. I just like the way it feels in my hands.

The previous rifles were the latest and greatest fads and never really felt right. I'm also getting older with more responsibilities and less discretionary income to blow on wheeling and dealing rifles and shotguns.

Bought a Winchester model 70 XTR Featherweight in .308 new in early 1982 and still hunt with it to this day.  It started with a Leupold M8 4x scope on top that didn't move (nor need to be adjusted) for 20 years.  I added a Swarovski 3x9 x 36mm for one season that performed well, but threw the balance off a bit.  I switched to a Leupold VX II 3x9 x 50mm that threw the balance off worse and took it off about as fast as it went on. For the last 6 years, it has a Leupold VX III 2.5x8 X 36 that fits like a dream. The scope has dots ground into the reticle at incriments of every 50 yards over the 200 yard zero.  It is deadly accurate.  I don't ever see any need in swaping it out.  No telling how many deer I've taken with it, but it has been lots.

Getting the .32 out again will make for a great hunt....Good Luck...my brother has the 16 ga dbl that our father used to kill his first deer with....Dad was lost in the Adirondacks and shot a 10 pt late in the day...left deer along the river...hiked downsteam...got home a 2:30am...his Dad and brother went back in morning and followed river back upsteam to get his deer...Dad became a very good hunter...I have been working at it for 50+ years to become as good....hunts2long

Mine is a Win Model 70 Shadow in .270 WSM that I got in 2000. It is still my primary deer gun. I did just get a CVA Optima Elite muzzy last year and have a .243 barrel for it. WhenI find a place to rifle hunt again, I will try that out for a bit.

M700 ADL in 270 Win that belonged to my father who gave it to me when I was 16 and hunting with a 20 gauge.  After complaining about the buck I saw out of range he told me to take his rifle.  I got that buck the next night and Dad gave me his rifle.
