Remington Gamemaster 760 Magazine Loading

hey there,
i'm new to the world of hunting. i recently inhereted a remington gamemaster 760 in .35 remington. it came with no magazines so i tracked down a short action remington mag which is cycling the rounds ok, however, it seems that i can only load the mag when the action is open. does anybody know if this normal for this rifle? wouldnt it make sense to be able to load the mag without having to chamber a round?
any help would be apprecieated,

I have a Rem 7600, and checked:  Mine does the same thing.

so you don't load a clip till you're ready to shoot then?

I just checked my 760 .308.  My mag goes in without the chamber open.  If your's doesn't, just depress the top round with the index finger of one hand while the butt is tucked under your arm and your gently start the slide forward until you pass it.

Oh, by the way, there are some cool locations here, very unlikely place to find good locations but good nonetheless...
Camping with a 9 yes, but hunting with just that? I don't know...

Yes.  I usually carry fully unloaded until I'm up in my stand and settled in. 
 
I'm going to be cleaning my rifles this weekend in preparation for Winter storage. I'll make a point to delve into this further and report back.
