Should I hinge cut undesirables like sweet gums or should it be pines, oaks or what? Thanks!!

I would hinge cut something you know deer will browse if your goal is to provide food and cover. Deer browsing is very regional so I'm not sure what your favored browse is but here in northcentral P.A. all oaks are browsed as well as white ash, sugar maple, and occasionally red maple. That being said, I wouldn't sacrifice too much potential timber value for a hinge cut. 1-2 acres of hinge cut undesirables would provide great cover and eventually more desired species may take over. Here in northcentral P.A., striped maple is one of our enemies, hinge cut for cover and hope oaks and ash get above it.
