Speaking Of Wind.....

One of my personal priorities for hunting any piece of ground is to know that particular area as well as humanly possible.
 
One of those pieces of knowledge is to know the prevailing winds there, and how that relates to the thermals and the terrain, under both dry and damp conditions.
 
A few years ago I started using colored smoke bombs during my off season scouting/bowhike trips. They can teach you a LOT about how the thermals and winds react, and because of the color, you can see it for quite a ways away from where you are.
 
I have learned to my surprise that on one particular N/S ridge I hunt, that an east wind will for sure blow OVER the ridge top, but if the humidity level is high, then the smoke (and my scent) will SINK about 50 to 60 yards downwind, and then rise UP the ridge side back towards me. This is just one example. I've also been able to determine scent "sinks", in a few areas, due to moist ground.
 
Has anyone else ever tried the smoke bombs?

Sounds like a really good Idea!  Where do you get yours?  Are they just the general fireworks stand variety?

Great idea WW, I'll give it a try.  Where do you get them?  I've seen some at Walmart around the fourth and labor day, is that what you use?

I bought them at a fireworks stand in Indiana when I had to go to Valaparaiso a while back. So I guess garden variety fireworks stuff is what you'd call it.
 
I have also heard that you can get them at plumbing stores that cater to trade plumbers. They use them for testing airflow.
 
Either way, make sure that you're REAL careful if using them in the fall or summer in drought-dry woods or fields.

You could test your scent lock and magic ju-ju panties out by dropping one of those colored smoke bombs in 'em.  [:-] You'll be able to see right where your farts go. Take video so we can see where farts go too. I bet smoke comes out the zippers. Who knows, maybe a smoke bomb gets hot enough to recharge the carbon?  You could also drop one of those babies into you boots to see where foot stink goes but do the ju-ju panties smoke test first. Ever listen to a Bic lighter light up real close to your ear? Real close, so you can hear the gas,......flick it. Did you hear the gas turn to fire? Or just burn your ear? [8|] Just remember, only you can prevent forest fires and don't forget to pick up your trash when you're done.
