Well IMO, he's a 1.5 (or he was when the photo was taken).
But I can see why he makes you wonder. He's clearly fattened up on acorns and he's got some tarsal stains. I wouldn't let the spikes worry you. He's clearly healthy and given a year or two, he may have P&Y headgear.

I agree with jph, possibly late born or like you said poor nutrition. Dont worry bout the spikes when I helped on a deer farm the guys biggest gross buck (267) was a spike as a 1.5    and they get the best feed possible.

Nice looking buck. I wish he would pop out on me sometime. I think he would go 3.5.
