CWD found in Rochester, MN Elk herd

Postby want2hunt » Wed Jan 28, 2009 4:38 pm

Article in the Star Tribune yesterday.

I hope Rochester deer hunting doesn't become Roseu hunting because of this.

"The state's sixth case of CWD in a captive elk or deer has raised concerns over the state's wild deer population."

Yea, I read that story too.  Damn CWD!  I think having these deer/elk farms has a lot to do with it.  Too many animals in close quarters!

Wow.  That is sad news for the elk farm as well.  They may have to destroy and test the whole herd (1,000 head of elk)

Buckhunter 21 I agree with you, these deer elk farms have a lot to do with CWD and something needs to be done about them.

Patriot, I understand "feeling sorry" for the rancher but I don't feel the least bit sorry. Elk and deer do not belong on ranches or behind fences and CWD is mother natures way of saying so. CWD is a direct product of these game farms and is a bigger threat to our wild deer, elk, and domestic animals than bait piles or food plots. The farmers are scared to death of CWD and TB and point the finger at deer feeders and bait hunters yet CWD keeps showing up on FARMS. 1000 elk destroyed because of CWD found is a shame especially when we only have 150 in the wild in Wisconsin. When are we going to understand that keeping deer and elk behind fences on game farms is the worst thing we could ever do to our wild elk and deer?

Hey Wack....
I think its really interesting what your saying.  Those elk farms and deer farms....how big are they ?
In Ottawa Ontario I don't know of any.  1000 elk seems like alot of elks.  What seem to be the main cause of CWD.  Is it a disease when too many cross together?

I believe the main problem has a lot to do with the transmission of saliva, and waste products between the different animals in the same herd. It is a real shame that this kind of thing keeps happening in PENNED animals. You think people would learn after its repetitiveness in the penned herds.

You think they would learn.   Is that why Vermont is banning captured animals...that I saw in anohter thread?

I completely agree. Wild animals should remain wild.
