WINONA, Minn. - Witnesses say a school bus carrying about two dozen Winona Middle School basketball players was on fire Friday evening as it drove toward a middle school, where it burst into flames in the parking lot.
No one was hurt.
Bob Koch of Minnesota City Bus Service, which owns the bus, says the driver hit a deer and didn't stop. The animal got caught under the bus and may have broken an oil line.
Winona firefighter John Yackel says witnesses reported seeing the bus "burning" while traveling down the road toward the middle school.
However, Koch says the driver didn't know there was a problem until he was about a block from the school. He says he pulled into the parking lot and immediately evacuated the bus.
A coach ran inside to grab fire extinguishers while others called 911. Assistant Fire Chief Jim Multhaup says the bus was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.
Koch says no one should be blamed for the "freak accident."
