White-Tailed Buck Gobbles Up Injured Bird

Postby Dan Schmidt » Tue Jul 20, 2010 10:50 am

We have reported in the past that white-tailed deer will eat meat when desperate, but this video is proof they don't need to be desperate! Thanks to D&DH reader Nancy Jo Adams for pointing this one out.

I will usually rupture the stomach when i'm finished field dressing a deer to determine what they are eating in an effort to learn more about the heard on the area I hunt. Imagine finding a bird skeleton when you're expecting corn.

Yeah somebody posted this already, man that is unreal.  Another poster posted pics of a doe eating a dead rabbit as well, but it was in the winter as there was snow on the ground.

Hey Dan in that video, the deer is a spike buck.

I wonder how long it will be until we see advertising for a deer scent called, "Fresh Dead Bird".

Couple of years ago I had some foxes in the woods around my house. Throughout the year I would occasionally put out a can a meaty dog-food for them. On several occasions I watched deer (usually an older doe) gobble up the dog food. At the time I figured she was eating it, despite the meat by-product, to get the corn, which is found in most canned dog food. Maybe I was wrong, perhaps she wanted the meat after all. Go figure.

Awesome video, never seen a deer eat anything like that! Doesn't look like the deer was hard up for food either, almost looks like it took advantage of a young or injured bird out of convenience, very interesting!
