My First Buck since 2000 (not a trophy, but I'm proud)

Postby BTRobertson » Fri Dec 13, 2013 10:25 pm

My first buck in 11 years, but also my first deer harvest in that long. Stopped hunting for a long time because I was an idiot, but have been hunting consistently the past two seasons and it's expanding to archery and small game next year in addition to rifle season. I love hunting in PA for whitetail! The buck is an 8-point, estimated a 2.5-year-old, not a trophy, but I am very proud. This is the largest buck I've ever shot, but in number of antlers, mass, and body size (170 lbs. live weight). Used a 1978 Winchester Model 70 .30-06 Springfield with a custom muzzle break and recoil-pad (reduced recoil on this rifle by 80%) and a Swift 3x9x40mm scope (replacing with a 4.5x14x50mm Leupold for next year). One shot at about 60-65 yds. through both lungs and the top of the heart, and he went about 15 net yards. Used a Federal Fusion 180 gr. cartridge.

Glad to hear that you got back into hunting and were successful. Good buck.
Keep life simple...if you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.

Nothing wrong with that one. Congrats. BTW, he sure has a long nose for a 2 1/2 year old deer; could be older than you think.

Not a trophy? Every deer is a trophy in the eyes of the hunter who bagged it. Even the does.
Nicely done. It might not make any lists, but who really cares? I'd take it anyday.
The only real difference between a good tracker and a bad tracker is observation. All the same data is present for both. The rest is understanding what you are seeing.
