Something few of us ever see...

Postby Everyday Hunter » Thu Mar 19, 2009 3:53 am

No, it's not Bigfoot. It's not a Chupacabra. It's not even Nessie.

It's a flying squirrel. (The date/time stamp on the photo is wrong. It seems as though when the temperature gets too low, the camera loses track of the time.)

I guess I should have said "Something few of us ever see... unless we watch old Rocky and Bullwinkle reruns." [:D]

They are cool little critters.  I've only seen'um two times in all my time in the woods.  The first time was in Franklin Co. Indiana very near the little town of Hamburg.  That was twenty years ago.  The last time was last spring in Hoosier Natl Forest in Jackson Co.  It's funny because both times they caught my eye was after they "flew" and my first thought was bird, but something didn't look right and I was curious enough to look closer. Nice pic, thanks for posting!

I've saw a couple, once when I was kid camping, we didn't see it till landed on the picnic table between about 5 of us kids, that were getting ready to roast marshmellows, the other time was in Athens Co. OH hanging treestands, I must have disturbed them because 3 came swooping out of the hollow tree next to the one I was hanging my treestand in. One landed about eye level, before gliding to the next tree.

When I was little they were cutting down some huge maple trees that were in bad shape infront of my friends house. We saw one flying back and forth. After the cutters and everyone left we noticed there were some babies on the ground. No fur, eyes closed.
My friend and I took them to raise them in an incubator and got a formula to feed them. We had them for a few days or so and then a woman with a mustache came, put them in a dunkin donuts box, and supposily took them to a zoo. I still have the picture of the three baby flying squirrels on my dresser.

I will never forget how bad that woman smelled.
Put me on a mountain, way back in the backwoods
Put me on a lake with biggin' on the line
Put me around a campfire cookin' something I just cleaned
