What else do you take hunting?

Postby John1961 » Thu Feb 05, 2009 2:10 am

A long with your fire arm, extra ammo and knife. What else do you take to your stand or blind?  I take the above and a small kit I carry with a compass, first aid items, drag rope, pen, tags, empty bottle, bino's and anything I think of befor I walk out the door.

The weather generally dictates the amount of extra clothes (or lack thereof)

Cell phone
calls, scents
Book/Magazine/journal & pen (if in blind)
DMAP Doe Tag
extra orange
55 gal garbage bag-----to improvise rain gear if needed
scent away spray
2 lights and 1-2 chem light sticks
Most of this stuff I stick in a fanny pack at the beginning of the year and just grab on the way out the door all year long

I very rarely, if ever, stand hunt much anymore. I usually stillhunt, and may sit for an hour or so on many of the deadfall logs I've prepared ahead of time.
Other than my weapon and license/FOID Card, I carry binocs (always!), knives, small first aid kit that fits in an insulated juice box bag, compass, folded TP, orange flagging tape, a few cable ties, pen, wind-puff bottle, water bottle, juice box, a sandwich and some oranges. This would be for an all day hunt.

I have a pack (similar to the Cabela's all-day transported fanny pack) that contains everything that I need for a days hunt.  My pack is one of the things that I wind up checking and double-checking as the season draws near.  This particular pack has proven to be an ideal size and fits my need very well.

These are the things I usually take:

grunt tube (tru-talker)
can call (quaker boy)
One turkey mouth call (you never know and sometimes it just fun to "talk turkey")
cover scent (usually 1 small bottle of scent killer or similar)
small squeeze bottle filled with flour (One puff is perfect for checking the wind)
extra gloves (thicker pair than what I start the day out with)
extra hat (a full face covering model)
an extra bow release (only during bow season)
Extra ammo (only during gun season)
neck gator (very useful!)
heat warmers (I swear by the full-length foot insole ones)
extra knife (old swiss army)
Small folding saw. (Mine's about the size of a typical folding knife.)
one of those leatherman multi-tool things
small sharpener
small first aid kit (I've never openned it, knock on wood)
compass (not really necessary for my private land but whatever, its small)
a roll of heavy string
zip ties (have many uses including fixing broken zippers, affixing tags)
flashlight and extra batteries
My range finder and extra batteries (an older Bushnell scout)
My bino's  (not really in my pack.  I wear em)
The hunting regulation manual for the current year
My tags along with some pens in a ziplock sandwich bag (keeps em from getting wet)
My two-way radios.  (One actually. The other is in my sons pack)
A couple of small snacks.  (Usually those protein bars or something similar)
Lots of napkins/TP.  (Not just for having to go! hehe)
a few latex gloves. (Nice for gutting and not getting too messy)
extra eye-care stuff for my contact lens.

That's about it.  Probably forgot one or two things.  It seems like a lot but it all fits into the pack very nicely and is not very heavy at all.

Yep!  I can remember, as a kid, riding the bus home and dropping the books grabbing my orange, a rifle and a handful of shells and out the back door I'd go.  These days I like to be comfy though![:D]
