15' Ladder STands

Postby lance.huhn » Sat Dec 13, 2008 10:39 am

All of my bowhunting is done from 15' ladder stands.  Basically because that is usually the stand that I can afford.   A few people have told me that 15' is too short, you need to be at least 20' or higher.  I just wanted to see what the general opinion on this would be.
Thanks,

On our hunting land all of our ladder stands are 20 feet high.  The deer don't seem to see us, the only times i've gotten busted was when they were within 5 yards and I believe they heard the tree stand squeak.  If you haven't gotten busted or if the deer aren't looking up at you then I think you should be fine.

This topic has been discussed sooo many times, its like "beating a dead horse" but, here we go! I dont beleive you "have to be" any height! People hunt (successfully) from the ground all the time! As long as you have decent cover, and you are "still" you can can most certainly kill deer from a 15' stand!! I could go on and on about this but, I really see no point! Short answer, your stand height is fine!

all my stands are 15 feet. i have a couple hang on stands with climbing sticks, i can get those up closer to 20 feet, but I have never noticed a real difference. trying to get by a deer's senses involves taking care of a whole combination of things, including scent control, camo, limiting your movement, etc. I think some guys get off on the 20 feet or higher thing because there is always someone out there looking for that one "magic trick" to getting deer every time. every little bit helps I'm sure, but I never worry about it. plenty of guys shoot lots of deer all the time sitting on a stump behind some bushes, so the difference between 15 feet and 20 feet I dont really believe makes that big of a difference. but everybody has their own thing.

I have two 160 class bow bucks at home that say otherwise. They were taken from a stand that was 12'. I do have a few stands that are over 20' but it is all about location, location, location!

I agree, if you have cover your good to go.

All spot on here with their advice-I`ve killed deer from 12' stands as well, but all my ladder stands now are 16' to 20', just because.

12' is perfectly fine, and as has been said, consider all parts of the equation, not just stand height.

All my deer kills have been from the ground, so i don't think height has a lot to do with getting busted or not, all other variables seem to be a little more important suck as wind direction, stand placement, hunting prressure... my stand was at i think 17' this year and i was able to get a lot of action, no kills but a lot of great action and thats what it's all about, being out there and enjoying the woods and the creatures in it!

I agree its not all about the height. If you have good cover 15ft. is pleny high. Dont forget about the wind...

Welcome to the site!!

My best stand is 16'. Out performs all of my stands that are 20' or better.

you have nothing to worry about as long as you play the wind and stay still.
