First Muzzleoader kill

Postby schlupis » Thu Dec 11, 2008 9:47 am

I have been muzzleoder hunting for 2 seasons now and yesterday was the final day of the Wisconsin muzzleoader season 12-10-2008. With 10 inches of snow on the ground and not a lot of wind I decided to go out for the last time, and see if I could finally kill my first deer with a muzzleoader and maybe earn my buck.  I got in my stand about 3:00 pm said a prayer to the big guy upstairs and at 3:45 I saw 5 does coming towards me, but had no shot, and they walked away from my position. Then about 10 mins later a spike buck came through, and right behind him came 2 nub bucks and a doe while preparing for the shot on the doe I noticed more deer coming behind them, the next thing I know there are 9 deer standing within 50 yards of my stand.

The doe I was focusing on finally stepped out into the food plot at 30 yards. I placed the front sight on her shoulder and when the smoke cleared she was laying right where I shot her. One of the best hunts of my life.

I got down checked the deer tagged her and then walked to get my truck because she died right in the food plot. From the time I got down tagged her and retrieved my truck was about 7 mins, While driving into the plot I kicked another deer off the plot standing near my tagged doe. So I had seen 15 deer in about a hour of hunting.

Upstate NY here, our season ends Tues. for ML. I'm getting out every chance I get between now and then. I think when this weather breaks, the sleet, rain, and snow quits, they will be moving and feeding.
I have taken 2 doe in 3 years w/ the ML.
There's nothing like being in the outdoors. Work is boring!
