Acorn Tips on Antlers

I have heard many theories, but not sure i have ever heard for sure exactly what causes a deer's anlters to form "acorn tips"
 
I had a deer this year that showed no signs of an acorn tip in velvet.  No bump, hole, imperfection in velvet, nothing.  Then he shed is velvet and the one tine had the acorn tip.
 
What causes this?

I have heard but have no research to back it up that it can be caused by either a injury while the velvet is still on early in antler development or from bugs getting underneith the velvet... Good Question I will have to do some research to find out.

I am certainly no expert and have heard many theories, the one that I hear most often from people who know is a nutritional deficiency.  I'm not sure if I believe it but it is a possibility.
