Is it illegal to sell your venison?

Postby Ifishandhunt » Mon Dec 13, 2010 6:50 pm

I noticed a few posts from folks (one-time posters) asking for venison. It makes me nervous when I see stuff like that because my first instinct is to think it's a spammer or worse, it is an anti trying to entrap someone (a hunter) by having them sell venison, which I think may be illegal, especially across state lines.

I will admit, it's the first time I've seen people come on-line here and point blank ask for venison. If it's legit, I think it is great if any hunter is willing to share their harvest. But I personally would be skeptical and check into the laws, find out what this person is about and be sure you have your bases covered.

Any thoughts on this this?

Believe it is illegal in MN.  You can gift it though, at least here.

To my knowledge, yes it is illegal to sell your venison and those that are offering to cover shipping are in fact making a financial transaction out of it, trafficking in wild game I believe.

It is illegal in Ohio to sell venison. Of course you can donate it or share for free, but if you sell it you have committed a crime.

What about trading? I used to know a guy who made the best homemade smallmouth bass bucktail jigs. I'd give him deer tails and he'd give me jigs. Was that illegal?

It is in Maryland. I have people that want  a whole deer and want to buy it. I tell them I will give them one but they have to pay tohave it processed.

You cannot sell it in MN.  I don't see any problem with bartering though.

Say if I wanted to trade you for some venison sausage and I give you venision burger in return.

Definitely illegal to sell ANY wild game in IL.  You can, however, gift pretty much anything you want to other people, i believe.  I think the law reads that you have to actually be at their place of residence (either yours or theirs) when the transfer occurs, so you couldn't mail it or anything.

So your deer tail/jigs trade is actually more like, You gave him a deer tail.  He gave you some jigs...

Now what if you used your own deer tail to tie some jigs, and then sold them.  Where does that fall?
