Ohio- I wouldn't worry about it. When I look at my self and see the scars that I have, I always remember how and when I got them. He will compare them with his buddies when he is older (like the scene in Lethal Weapon when Mel Gibson and Rene Russo compare "battle scars") and he will always remember that his grandfather cared enough to get him a bike to play outdoors and not sit behind a computer all day.

Thanks everyone for the kind encouragement. He is doing great and likes his cast. My guilt is resolving well.
