In the realm of possibilities it could be just about anything...could be Jimmy Hoffa for that matter.

Two comments come to mind. First, everywhere goes somewhere, there is a reason, even if you don't know it. There might be a cave in the rocks. Second, now.... track it. It's track will tell you quite a bit about what that is. Follow them long enough, you get to see what made 'em up close and personal.
The only real difference between a good tracker and a bad tracker is observation. All the same data is present for both. The rest is understanding what you are seeing.
