Hornady Lever Revolution .44 Mag ammo

Postby hunter480 » Mon Nov 03, 2008 1:54 pm

Went to the range this late afternoon with my deer hunting partner. I picked up a beautiful Winchester 94 in .44 Mag some time back, and was dying to try the Hornady Lever Revolution in .44 Mag, and wow.

Shooting from a solid rest at 25 yards with iron sights, the rounds were nearly going thru the same hole on the target. I moved back to 50 yards, and again, from a solid rest, the groups were spectacular. Pretty incredible since I have nearly no expreience with open sights. From the time I`ve been hunting, all my long arms have been scoped with Leupolds.

At 51, with my eyesight beign what it is, along with no experience with iron sights, I`m really sorry now that I haven`t scoped this rifle. I`d wanted to keep the cowboy look, but should have scoped it.

Anyway, the Lever Revolution ammo in .44 Mag was outstanding thru my beautiful little Winchester 94.

I know what you mean hunter480. I love lever actions and prefer to keep them clean looking without a scope but also have the same sight problem. I used to have a Marlin .30-30 saddle gun. I would like to get the same gun in .44mag but will have to wait out the economy.
My favorite plinking gun is a Marlin Origional Golden 39M saddle gun. Love the cowboy guns.

What size scope do you recommend for the lever action guns?  My wife just bought me a marlin 336 xlr .35 for christmas.  I'm looking to scope it.

I did end up scoping my Winchester 94, .44 magnum. I`m a Leupold guy and I put a 2x7 on it. Now I`m thinking I should have gone 3x9, but it will be ok as is.

Depending on the caliber lever action you have, you`re not going to be shooting at 200 yards anyway, so any good 2x7, 3x9 should be all you need.

I didn't know if a 3x9 would be too big.  I bought a Burris 3x9 earlier this year I'll try on it.  Thanks for the info.

NCHunter I would not even put a scope on that gun it is a great gun for pushing the bush while driving deer. I had a winchester model 94 never thought of putting a scope on it not that I have anything against a scope just dont like them on a perfect lever action gun. I just bought a Savage model 99 in .300 savage and wont put a scope on it, but it does have a nice peep sight that can be folded up or down if you need more accuract shooting because the deer is a little further out you can push the front sight down and flip the peep up and it works great..

Just my 2 cents.
