Which cold weather head covering is right for me?

Postby dkscism » Thu Dec 05, 2013 12:24 am

Hello, new to the forum here. I'm a college student in SC, and a beginner deer hunter. Now that it's getting cold, I'm in need of a head covering that will keep my head, face, and neck warm. These are not hard to find, but I want something that will not affect my hearing in the stand. I like to be able to hear everything. I know there has to be some compromise between warmth and hearing ability, but I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with a covering that kept you warm while still being able to hear? I wonder if there is a product for this specific purpose?

I have a box full of different types of face masks designed for various temperatures. I carry a few different ones in my pack depending on the temps. The colder weather masks do cover your ears, but if they are made of a knit that is loose you can hear fairly well. I try to not cover my ears, but if it really gets cold I will. It's a trade off. Go to your sporting goods store and try them all.
Keep life simple...if you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.
