What is the best way to remove ticks??

Question for you guys, starting this past year we have a dog in the house.  We always used to have a flea and tick collar on her in the summer, but now that she's living inside with us, we would like something that isn't as smelly I guess.  I was just curious what any of you use on your dogs that seems to work pretty well?  From my experience it seems to be hit and miss when it comes to flea and tick over the counter stuff.  Thanks in advance!

 
 
We use what is called Frontline Plus. We get it from our local vet.

Probably more than your basic collar but sure seems to do a great job on ticks. We've used this product for several years now and have been very pleased by the results!

Just got this in an email, thought I would share it. Never tried it but I think I will give it a try next time I need it.
 
had a pediatrician tell me what she believes is the best way to remove a tick.
This is great, because it works in those places where it's some times difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a head full of dark hair, etc.
 Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and swab it for a few seconds (15-20), the tick will come out on its own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away.
 
This technique has worked every time I've used it (and that was frequently), and it's much less traumatic for the patient and easier for me. Unless someone is allergic to soap,   I can't see that this would be damaging in any way.

Wanderer - I EM'd Cabelas.com several weeks ago and they could not find it in their inventory, so the Tickkey doesn't have an item number (no surprise).  Probably, if I went to a store, most would likely carry it.  I did go on the Tickkey web site and found some sources.  My cousin picked up a tick remover at Dick's Sporting Goods and he tells me it works great and cost a couple of $.  This one clamps on underneath the tick and you twist it off.  Also, ref. Woody's #13 Post dated 5/5/09 below that uses a glob of liquid soap on a cotton ball.  I will have to try that and let everyone know.  Anyway, thanks to all for weighing in on my question regarding tick removal.  If you hear of any other interesting techniques, let us know.  Tom Mac

It just so happened that I received the Snopes link "http://www.snopes.com/oldwives/tick.asp" from a friend regarding the "Old Wives" tails" about ticks and how to remove them.  I tried attaching the link directly, but it did't work.  If anyone can attach directly, feel free to do it and let me know how you did it. This link is very interesting and Pu-Pu's a lot of the techniques discussed.  It basically says the best way is to pull/pry them out with small tweezers.  Using a Tick key or the tool sold by Dick's Sporting Good would also work, since they basically pry the little critters out.  You can also see on the Snopes site links to Centers for the Disease Control and U.S. Food and Drug Administration which gives additional information about the subject.  [size="4"]Tom Mac[/size]
