Sorry to hear about your injured buck, I hope you get him, but don't blame the broadhead. I don't shoot rage, they are too pricey, but any broadhead will do the job if the shot is good, and the poundage is sufficient for the distance.
You say you hit the shoulder squarely, You might as well have hit armor plating. A bullet will blow through a shoulder bone, but few broadheads will, and those that do, have lost a lot of their momentum, and penetration will suffer for it.
I shoot a 150 lbs crossbow, and I will not even try to go through a shoulder.
The only real difference between a good tracker and a bad tracker is observation. All the same data is present for both. The rest is understanding what you are seeing.
