Handgun Regultion Help

I'm currently 17 and theirs a possiblilty I may be moving up to Superior this coming fall to work for a hunting outfitter, I will be 18 by then.  I know you have to be 21 to buy a handgun from a licensed dealer but I read somewhere that you can legally buy one from a private party if you are 18.  Seeing as how I will be in wolf and bear country I want one for a sidearm when I'm hunting.  Does anyone know if it is legal for me to posses one when hunting even though I would only be 18?  I used to think you could not do anything with a handgun unless you were 21 but now I'm not so sure.  Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

I am a firearms dealer. You are correct on the possession of a handgun by someone at the age of 18.
Go to Section Vll and check out Fed Regs, Since much ammo used in handguns is also used in longuns, the "handguns only" ammo part of the statute is usually a mute point...but has some applications.
