NRB approves revised EAB and no Oct. herd control

I was at the NRB hearing today and then walked over to the Capitol for the Assembly committee hearing. Both were in regards to eliminating EAB and the Oct. herd control hunt. The NRB version is a one year temp thing and the bill is a more permanent action.

I testified in support at both hearings. The NRB voted 7-0 to support removing the current EAB rules and the Oct. hunt (outside of the CWD zone) The legislature will exec. the bill in a week or so.

Lots of people at both hearings but I doubt any of the outspoken and highly opinionated folks here took the time to make their opinion known in a format that actually counts but will gladly speak up on a chat room that has the same effect as shouting into an empty bucket.

A young fella from the UW system brought a huge photo of a deer enclosure (fenced in area that allows no wildlife into the area) to the legislative hearing that showed lots of vegetation inside the fence and very little outside the fence. When pressed by legislators for what the deer density was outside the fence the kid said he didn't know (making the point he hoped to make useless) exposed by the question, his response was "you can bet it was more than zero"
 
That was basically the theme of the tree and plant folks yesterday. None could provide science or even a deer density they support that would satisfy them for tree growth but its was clear that a number close to zero would be best for their interests. None of them cared about the harm EAB does to accurate population estimates (the foundation of deer management) they just know there are always too many deer for their tastes and even more aggressive harvest measures are good.
