Photos: Bucks Shed Velvet

A sure sign fall is almost here is when the bucks start shedding velvet. Here are two photos submitted to D&DH by a friend of a staff member.

I am still waiting to get some photos like that. I would consider it lucky to get pics like that, because it seems before you know it the racks are shined up.

If anyone doubts how fast shedding velvet occurs, look at these 4 pics from my Alabama lease in 2006. In the first pic ,on the evening of Sept 18th, the Cotton Field Buck shows a bloody spot on the inside of his right main beam. At 4:40 the next morning, he's back at the feeder still in velvet. By 9:19 that same evening, he's completely clean except for one scrap of velvet hanging down past his left eye. This buck had 5 points on the right but only 3 on the left as a 2.5 year old. He taught me as much about deer behavior as any book I ever read. I've taken over 600 pictures of him off one trailcam. I passed him 4 or 5 times during a 2 year span. One of our younger members took him out later in 2006.

I noticed the date on your game camara says 9/13/2009 is this this year and the month is off or is the year off? Also I have a question I live in Missouri and I was out yesterday Sunday 9/7/09 and in and area where I know there are lots of bucks. But I havn't found any trees where it looks like they are rubbing yet. Is it possible they are still in the velvet here?

We were hog hunting on state land this weekend and had a spike walk up on us that was still in velvet. I'm in southern SC.

I just scooped up 241 pics off of my cam last Friday, about 5 days ago. One of the pictures had a spike buck still in velvet. So I would say YES. What part of MO you in??

I'm in Ohio and as of the middle of last week bucks were still in velvet
