Red or White?

Acorns, that is.

I have my own opinion, based on what I've been told, but do you believe deer favor white or red acorns?

The area I hunt has had a bumper crop of acorns this year. Red oaks outnumber the white oaks and there are more red acorns than white.

Will deer eat both, even if they prefer one over the other?

Hey there Washburn, I feel that deer prefer white oak acorns over red, I don't know why it seems the deer like them better.  Not that red oak acorns are bad, they're great too.  If its a mix of varieties it may or may not make a defference, but the deer are likely to be there.

Deer vary from place to place so I'm not sure you could say one over the other. White oaks on the other hand are the only oak that I'm aware of that drop acorns every year.
 
Red, turkey, pin oaks drop every other year.

Everything I've read says deer prefer white oak acorns to red - supposedly less tanin making them less bitter.  I wish they prefered hickories, have bunches of those.

Agreed.  White is preferred over red when both are available.

I agree with the white acorns . The Red acorns have a bitter taste .

Differences in white and red oak acorns are sometimes difficult for me to distinguish.

White Oak is prefered over red
because white Oak is less sour
but if a deer is presented with only a red oak they definatly will eat it
