SE SD apple/pear varieties

Postby dlotto28 » Sun Aug 17, 2008 2:58 pm

I am moving to southeast SD and am wondering what some good apple and pear varieties would be to plant on my father in laws farm for deer.

I'm not sure about apples and pears, but the crabapple trees I purchased from the National Wild Turkey Foundation were of exceptional quality.  I have been very pleased with them, although they've only been in the ground since April.  You might give them a try.
Also don't forget tree tubes on whatever you decide to plant.  Will help to keep deer from browsing them down to nothing.

I agree with Ranwin,
Crab apple trees are hard to beat. They are hardy, produce tons of apples, and deer absolutely love them. As for the pear trees, I cannot say as i havent had any experience with them
