I have used a book in the past called "training retreivers for marshes and meadows" by James B. Spencer. This book keeps everything positive and makes your dog love doing everything and the best part is it is written for the amatuer trainer. I have followed this book step by step with my yellow lab and he has completed his JR hunt test title and will be working on his SR title next summer and the most i have ever spent working with him a day is about 30 mins usually about 15mins.
The key is to do it everyday, even it it is only 5-10mins.
