I've heard that this year the NY bear season opens up the first week of deer firearms season. Has anyone here ever shot a bear in deer season? If so, where? I've never got the NY bear tag before, but I'm thinking about doing it this year.

Hoping to this year....we always see them on the run during the first week at camp ...but could never shoot...then after a few days ...nadda

" Has anyone here ever shot a bear in deer season? If so, where?" I would think outdoors would be best, when you shoot them indoors people get upset, and you are likely to get thrown out of the petting zoo! Just my two cents worth. 
The only real difference between a good tracker and a bad tracker is observation. All the same data is present for both. The rest is understanding what you are seeing.

If you are huntin the southern tier of WNY Catt., Allegany or Steuben Co's I would try and snag one before the season opener. We have some big bears on trail cam this year. What ever the $ is for a a out of state bear tag sure beats 2K to spend to kill one in canada. But this year seems to be lousy with bear. A guy that hunts below us on the hill from our property says all he has seen during the bow season are bears. Good Luck

I picked up a tag yesterday. One hunter in our party shot a bear with a bow back in late October: "Honey, I just saw a bear!"
Besides trail camera photos of bears on the property, we have this evidence of a large bear:
The claw marks on that tree are 8 feet high!

This may be a great year for bears taken. I have heard of 3 big ones taken, a guy I work with that hunts in the Machias area had a guy in his hunting party kill a 510 LB monster near 7 foot nose to tail B&C qualifier hands down. I have two on trail cam on our property in Franklinville which one looks as to be a young one maybe 100-125 ish and the other is pushing 300.

Just heard of another one on Thanksgiving day. An Amish guy shot a 580 pounder in the Clymer area in SWNY.

I shot a bear on the second day of rifle season in Chautauqua County. 275lb boar.
