20 Gauge slug guns?

Hey guys,
I am in the market for a new slug gun for deer. I have always shot a 12 gauge and it worked well, although I never have been able to shoot a 12 gauge as good as I would like. I honestly think it is because of the recoil. I just hate shooting my 12 gauge slug guns. I can get a good deal on a mossberg 500 20 gauge with a rifled barrel. All my shots are going to be under 100 yards.  Just looking for some feedback from you gun guys. Anyone use a 20 for deer? How does it work? Thanks ahead of time!!!

IMO, I would stear clear of anything Mossberg.  I've personally had nothing but problems with them, and that goes with everyone that I've talked to as well that has/had them.  My recommendation would be a Remington 870 in 20 gauge.  The 870 is a great gun...I have a 12 gauge, rifled barrel....LOVE IT!!!!!  I believe it can be said that the Remington 870 is one of the best overall slug guns on the market!  Reasonably priced too!

I use a 20ga mossberg and a 20ga Browning and both a smooth bore .....the mossberg I use for turkey but also I've shot several nice deer with it and well my browning is my sweet gun..I've taken some pretty awsome kill shots with her ...open sights and using Breneke 3'' mags...this year I'll be rifle hunting at camp using a new remmington 243 scoped with a nikon pro hunter...but the browning is coming along as well............

I think a 20 gauge slug gun is more than adequate for whitetails as it throws a slug of about 350 grains or so. By all means, get one with a rifled barrel and shoot saboted slugs. A low end variable scope of perhaps 1-4X is also a wise idea. Besides pumps, there are also some reasonably priced bolt action slug guns available.

For accuracy, either the barrel must be fixed in the receiver or the barrel must have a cantilever mount attached.

Recoil: When sighting in or practicing, place a five-pound bag of shot between the stock and your shoulder. When hunting, you're wearing heavy clothes, firing from field positions and hopefully, one or two rounds at most so recoil should not be a factor when firing at game.

ive shot mossbergs for years and love em. i bought my daughter a 500 bantam in 20 for deer and turkey. with rem core lokt sabots its a tack driver out to 150(thats as far as ive pushed it)

I bought a New England Firearms Pardner pump in 12 ga. and shoot Hornady SST and it is great!!  Cheap, accurate, and is almost exactly like my 870.  This gun cost me $20 more than an 870 slug barrel.  Now I dont have to swap things around.  Suggest you check them out before you spend more.  Good luck with it, Panman

Thanks for the replies so far! I am definately going with a  mossberg! I have 2 already and I love them.  I am mainly just looking for the info on how a 20 gauge works on deer. I am happy to read what I have read! Thanks alot and keep it coming

ive latched onto my daughters when she isnt hunting because its light easy handling and shoots great.
